More Information on Canada and Europe

  • Canada-Europe relations are covered on the Mission of Canada to the European Union website.
  • The Canada-Europe dialogue covers all areas of co-operation and includes regular expert-level Canada-Europe meetings, meetings of officials and ministerial meetings. These discussions culminate in the Canada-Europe Summit, held twice a year.
  • The first round of Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement negotiations took place in October 2009 in Ottawa. The partners are aiming at an agreement that will exceed any trade and economic agreement negotiated either by the E.U. or by Canada to date.
  • A second round of these negotiations took place in Brussels in January 2010, and subsequent rounds have been scheduled in April, July and October. The aim is to conclude the negotiations within 2 1/2 years.
  • A free trade agreement between Canada and the European Free Trade Association came into force Jan. 5, 2010. Members of the association are Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
