Air, Rail, and Port

Air Connections

  • British Columbia has 38 certified airports – including six that provide international services for passengers and/or freight: Vancouver, Victoria, Prince George, Kelowna, Abbotsford and Cranbrook. These airports have undergone multi-million dollar expansions in recent years.
  • Prince George International Airport (YXS) has recently completed a $37-million expansion and now features the third longest commercial runway in Canada. YXS is strategically located on trans-Pacific flight paths and is positioning itself to complement Anchorage, Alaska as a refueling and handling location for wide-body cargo carriers between North America and Asia.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is Canada’s second largest airport and busiest global gateway to Asia for passengers and freight.

  • In 2009, 64 airlines flew regular service into YVR. The airport services 138 destinations (101 via non-stop service) throughout North America and the world.
  • U.S. destinations are serviced by 80 direct flights a day. Another 99 flights a week go to the Asia Pacific, 63 a week to Europe and 33 a week to Mexico.
  • YVR is a growing freight distribution hub and is served by seven of the top 10 air cargo carriers.
  • Both Vancouver and Prince George international airports qualify as foreign trade zones, allowing for duty-free and tax-free storage of imported goods before they are exported from Canada.
  • A $200-million expansion of YVR was completed in 2007. Phase 2 of the expansion is planned between 2011 and 2014.
  • Conde Nast Traveller named YVR the second favourite airport in the world in a survey of its readers. U.K.-based Skytrax ranked Vancouver the top airport in North America and #8 in the world.

  • Both the Canadian and U.S. governments have invested in added border customs capacity to ensure that freight is cleared quickly and efficiently.
  • Freight transit time via rail from Vancouver to Chicago is 93 hours.
