June 3rd - Comox Valley Echo – Local businesses Seek Boost from Overseas Trade Team

Nine provincial trade and investment representatives working in seven countries were the Comox Valley Wednesday to meet with businesses wanting to expand into overseas markets. It was the first time the provincial government has sent all its trade ambassadors into rural regions of B.C. to work with companies, regional economic development agencies and communities in a bid to boost both exports and inward investment.

Two days of visits by B.C.'s international trade representatives have come and gone, and Prince George is the better for it, according to hosting organization Initiatives Prince George (IPG) vice president Kathie Scouten. Cathy Yao, B.C.'s sales lead in South China, helped Prince George twin with the city of Jiangmen which has already sent an inbound trade delegation with a slate of mutual business opportunities now being explored.

The trade representatives, who work out of China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, and California were available for one-one meetings.

Prince George, B.C.- Several of the international trade representatives for the province of B.C. are in Prince George today and tomorrow on an information sharing session. The trade reps have offices in Europe, Japan, Korea, India, and California and they are the ones who can help link projects in northern B.C. with markets and investors in other parts of the world.

Already established in the U.S. and with customers in Australia and parts of the U.K., Vernon-based Progessive Solutions is looking to expand. Creators of software for the forest products industry, and named as one of Maclean’s magazine’s Top 100 Employers in Canada, Progressive Solutions Inc. vice-president Keith Matterson will jet off to a lumber expo in Germany to pitch his company.

British Columbia's India-based trade and investment representative Pratap Raju, who operates out of Bangalore, told Asian Journal this week that although India and Canada do not feature in each others Top 10 trading partner country list, Canadian High Commissioner to India Stewart Beck has been given the charge to triple Canadian-Indian trade in the next three years from the currently reported $4.5-5 billion to $15 billion by the year 2015.

The delegation representing China, Japan, Europe and the U.S. West Coast outlined their services for B.C. businesses, offered advice on building networks in foreign markets, toured area factories and met one-one one with companies.

North Okanagan companies have an opportunity to learn about global marketing. Representatives from B.C. International Trade and Investment will be in Vernon Wednesday. “This is truly a great opportunity for companies that are looking to connect with on-the-ground staff representing the province in Asia, Europe and the U.S.,” said Kevin Poole , the City of Vernon’s economic development manager.

The B.C. government is bringing its nine trade representatives from around the world to the province's communities, including in B.C.'s Interior, to help businesses who want to expand into overseas markets. The trade and investment representatives will outline their overseas services, offer advice on building networks in foreign markets and meet one-on-one with as many companies as time allows.

Venture Kamloops is hosting a forum to help businesses build valuable contacts, relationships and networks in foreign markets with B.C. trade representatives. The Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Investment will be bringing the province’s network of overseas trade and investment representatives to the Thompson-Okanagan region to meet with companies that are looking to expand their exports beyond traditional markets or seeking investment for well-defined projects. The international markets targeted include the Americas, Japan, Korea, north and south China, India and Europe.

A unique tradeshow makes a stop at Interior Savings Centre on Friday. The Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Investment is bringing several overseas trade and investment representatives (known as TIRs) to Kamloops to network with businesses wanting to expand their reach into foreign markets, as well as those seeking investment for well-defined projects.
