British Columbia’s reputation as an international digital media hub gained more steam with the November 2014 announcement of Japanese game developer, gumi Inc
., opening an office in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Established in 2007, gumi Inc. is a developer and operator of mobile games, and has distributed more than 40 titles on various platforms, including hit games like Brave Frontier and Ninkyodo. The company has steadily grown globally since 2012, expanding its overseas operations to Singapore, Korea, China, Taiwan, France, Sweden the United States and now Canada.
In a press release announcing the opening, the company credited B.C.’s International Trade Minster Teresa Wat for encouraging its move to British Columbia. The Minister worked closely with ministries across the B.C. government to ensure gumi Inc. realized the competitive advantages of establishing operations in B.C.
"The B.C. Ministry of International Trade, through its trade office in Japan, has worked closely with gumi to make the opening of a Canadian studio in Vancouver a reality. B.C. continues to build on its reputation as a leading global video games hub in Canada, with over 85 studios employing 5,000 full-time highly paid employees, and thousands more under contract throughout the province,” said the Minister.
During her recent trade mission to Asia, Minister Wat also met with executives from gumi Inc. in Japan, where they discussed the company’s intention to hire 50 staff in one year for their B.C. office (all local hires) and to work with local educational institutions in British Columbia for recruitment. These institutions have become a magnet for talent. Each year, 3,000 graduates from British Columbia’s post-secondary programs enter the thriving local media industry.
As an international centre for console, social, and mobile game production, Internet, and app design, British Columbia offers gaming and digital media companies comprehensive infrastructure with full studios and equipment; targeted incentives; and an exciting creative atmosphere. Companies are also attracted to British Columbia’s strategic location on Canada’s west coast, allowing them to do business with colleagues around the world.
