British Columbia’s technology sector is home to over 10,200 exciting and innovative technology companies, including the world’s largest cluster of visual effects (VFX) and animation studios, a gaming industry with a global reputation and leading companies in information and communication technology (ICT), wireless, life sciences and clean technology.
Vancouver has more than 1,000 tech start-ups contributing to a vibrant tech ecosystem that in 2017 was ranked 1st

The B.C. technology sector is a major driver of economic growth in the province, with tech employment at the highest level ever recorded. With multiple technology clusters in cities such as Vancouver, Victoria, and Kelowna, British Columbia is a magnet for major global companies and fast-growing start-ups. These firms are drawn to the diverse and highly-skilled tech talent found in the province.
Because the demand for talent in B.C.’s tech sector is increasing faster than the supply, beyond using the skills and talent of B.C. workers, companies need to be able to attract skilled workers from around the world. A pilot project under the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP)
helps employers address their talent needs by providing a fast-tracked, permanent immigration pathway for in-demand foreign workers and international students.
To help make it easier for tech and innovation companies to recruit top international talent to British Columbia, the Province has extended the BC PNP Tech Pilot
to June 2019, and reduced the eligibility requirement from a permanent full-time job offer to a one-year full-time job offer. Under the pilot, immigration applications are prioritised to meet the tech sector’s fast-paced demands.
The Government of British Columbia is working to increase the number of skilled immigrants to come into the province to help meet demand in the labour market and grow the economy. Tech entrepreneurs and skilled workers from other leading-edge countries can help grow B.C.’s technology sector, leading to more jobs for British Columbians. Programs such as the BC PNP allow tech companies to efficiently bring top global talent and leadership to British Columbia and ensure that B.C.’s technology sector can attract and retain the talent it needs to grow.
The BC PNP Tech Pilot is one reason top international companies are establishing companies in British Columbia. B.C. is committed to actively supporting a vibrant and stable business environment so that people throughout the province can benefit from good jobs and a sustainable economy.
