British Columbia’s life science sector was strongly represented at this year’s BIO 2016 Conference in San Francisco from June 6-9, 2016.  The conference is the largest global event for the biotechnology industry featuring the BIO Business Forum as well as the largest biotechnology exhibition.

LifeSciences BC, an industry association that supports B.C.’s life sciences sector, has led a delegation of over 40 companies to the conference for the past 11 years. This year, they hosted a networking dinner highlighting B.C.’s capabilities in the sector. The event aimed to foster international partnerships and connect B.C. companies with industry leaders.

During the three-day event, British Columbia companies remained in the spotlight with partnership and research announcements, such as Innovative Targeting Solutions (ITS), a Burnaby-based company who finalized a research collaboration deal with Merck, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. The collaboration will utilize an innovative protein engineering platform developed by ITS which allows researchers to generate and engineer fully human antibodies.

ITS is just one of the many companies that make up the diverse life sciences sector in British Columbia. With more than 300 biopharmaceutical and medical device companies, British Columbia has a thriving life sciences sector offering investment opportunities in life sciences products and services.

A steady stream of innovation also flows into the industry, thanks to the array of high calibre educational institutions. The University of British Columbia alone has founded more than 20 companies, and worked with local and global industry partners to commercialize more than 80 technologies. These companies benefit from being in the same time zone as the scientific community in Washington State and California. British Columbia’s strategic location means they can also connect with both Asia and Europe in the same business day.
