B.C.-based SSI’s splashy booth at SMM 2016
British Columbia brought a delegation of twelve powerhouse ocean technology
companies to the Shipbuilding Machinery & Marine Technology Show (SMM 2016
) in Germany’s major port city of Hamburg, last week. SMM is the world’s leading maritime industry biennial trade fair, featuring over 2,200 exhibitors from 66 countries.
Digitisation was the main focus of this year’s SMM and “Smart Shipping” was the buzz word throughout the exhibition halls, discussions and on social media. The term refers to the future of the shipping industry, specifically to harnessing technology to integrate networks of ships and the smart use of data to enhance efficiency. Another focus of this year’s show was environmental protection and alternative propulsion technologies; with an added 3,500 M2
hall featuring eco-friendly propulsion exhibitors.

.. An additional four B.C. companies attended the show and “walked the floor”, bringing the delegation to twelve.

Chief Technology Officer at SSI presented to a busy room. “A similar event hosted by the King of the Holland attracted 40 attendees and we had 38!” remarked BC Trade and Investment’s Senior Manager of Technology and Innovation Business Development, Aijuan Zhu. The B.C. seminar attendees were all professionals from the international shipbuilding industry, including representatives from several of the most prominent shipyards in Europe, notably Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. in Gdansk, Poland, which has been contracted to build the next fleet of B.C. Ferries.

is making waves globally with their Autodesk based solutions for the shipbuilding and offshore industry - the majority of the US Navy’s future fleet is being designed using SSI software.
