British Columbia’s Economic Strengths and Global Position

British Columbia is well positioned to navigate global economic uncertainty. The province has been a national leader in GDP and wage growth since 2017 and maintains one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada. Its strengths include abundant clean energy, critical minerals, strong partnerships with First Nations and a highly skilled workforce.

The province exported more than $90 billion in goods and services in 2023. Key sectors include energy, forestry, technology, professional services, life sciences and agrifood. British Columbia’s location on the Pacific west coast also provides strategic access to global shipping routes. This makes the province a vital gateway for trade and a central part of Canada’s diversification strategy.

Trade Diversification and New Global Market Opportunities

British Columbia is committed to reducing reliance on the United States and expanding trade with fast-growing markets. The Province’s Look West approach aims to double exports to non-US markets and strengthen interprovincial trade. This strategy builds on years of progress and reflects the need for resilience in a shifting global economy.

Quick facts:

  • The Look West strategy is focused on attracting $200 billion in private sector investment over the next 10 years.

The province has expanded its international presence with new trade offices in Taiwan, Vietnam and Mexico. These offices complement established networks in the broader ASEAN region, Korea, Japan, China, India, Europe and the United States. British Columbia now has more than 50 Trade and Investment Representatives in 14 key markets across three continents.

These offices help companies find partners, navigate regulations and secure new opportunities. Recent areas of growth include aerospace and technology partnerships in Mexico, low carbon innovation in Taiwan and agrifood and forestry opportunities in Vietnam. Trade missions to India, Japan, Malaysia and Korea have also strengthened market access. A new forestry office in London will support expansion into Europe and future opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa.
