Taiwan’s geographic location positions it as a potential regional hub for companies entering the wider Asian market, thanks to its easy access and distribution pathways to East and Southeast Asia. Taiwan is a key part in the global technology supply chain and has a reputation for innovation, ranking number one in patent filings. The country also boasts strong infrastructure, a highly educated workforce, and a high level of openness to international trade. Taiwan’s GDP in 2023 was $782 billion USD, with a GDP per capita of $34,430 USD, and its total population in 2024 is 23 million. Taiwan is a priority market for trade and investment in B.C.’s Trade Diversification Strategy.

Trade & Investment Highlights

  • In 2024, Taiwan and Canada signed a Science, Technology, and Innovation Arrangement to promote opportunities for business-led co-innovation partnerships in high-tech sectors under the Canadian International Innovation Program, expanding research collaborations across Canadian and Taiwanese ecosystems.
  • In 2023, Taiwan and Canada signed a foreign investment promotion and protection arrangement to encourage and safeguard investments, including key benefits and protections to Taiwanese investors choosing B.C. as a business destination.
  • Through its Indo-Pacific Strategy, Canada supports the economic empowerment of Indigenous Peoples through the implementation of the Indigenous Peoples Economic and Trade Cooperation Arrangement (IPETCA) in cooperation with existing partners, such as Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan, and Indigenous Peoples from participating economies.
  • In 2024, Taiwan was the 7th largest destination for B.C. goods exports, receiving 1.5% of B.C.’s commodity exports, totaling $818 million CAD.
