From large employers in the resources sector to small-scale entrepreneurs and innovative social enterprises, we have created a strong, resilient community economy. Smithers is a regional government centre with access to key provincial ministries. Our airport is close to town, offers daily flights to Vancouver and has been zoned to accommodate industrial development. We are known nationally as a hub for the exploration industry, with a significant cluster of drilling, expediting and related support industries. Smithers has the 2nd highest number of PhD's per capita in the province and is home to four locally started $50 million dollar companies who maintain their headquarters here.
Smithers is growing, attracting young families and retirees who are drawn not only to economic opportunities, but also to the abundant amenities of the Bulkley Valley. These include high number of quality medical facilities, great schools, world-class outdoor recreation opportunities, and a vibrant arts and culture scene. We’re an active community that cares about the environment and is working to create a sustainable future for our kids and grandkids. We like to think of Smithers as more than a place to work – it’s a place to put down roots, a town with a quality of life that is simply exceptional.
