Digital Technology Supercluster

In 2017, the Government of Canada launched a business-led innovation supercluster initiative across Canada and committed to eventually invest $1.4 billion to fund 100 collaborations with 1,000 organizations over a decade. The projections indicate that efforts during this time will generate an estimated $15 billion in incremental GDP and 50,000 new jobs.

The Digital Technology Supercluster (DTS) is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, with a focus on virtual, mixed and augmented reality, data collection and analytics, and quantum computing. The Government of Canada projects to invest $153 million in the DTS to be matched by the private sector. The expected economic impact over 10 years is more than $5 billion in GDP growth and the creation of more than 13,500 jobs.

Success Story - Atomhawk Expands Studio in British Columbia

Atomhawk Design is an art studio that services the games industry, founded in Newcastle, United Kingdom, in 2009. It is established as one of the original and leading external art development partners. In 2017, Atomhawk decided to open a studio in Vancouver, British Columbia. This move provided access to new clients, as well as access to B.C.’s talent pool and market. This year, Atomhawk is expanding its team in Vancouver to twenty staff and has successfully delivered projects for companies such as Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Activision and Zynga. Their United Kingdom and Canadian teams have worked on many well-known projects, such as PUBG (ranked mode), Mortal Kombat 11 (animation) and FIFA 20.

Prior to opening a studio in B.C., Atomhawk has visited Vancouver on an annual basis to attend XDS, an international games industry event hosted by Electronic Arts. British Columbia appealed to the company as a great place for its employees to live and work. A key pillar of the company is that they do not enforce overtime and that it is important for the staff to have an excellent work/life balance, which aligns with the atmosphere of the province. Atomhawk also partners with a wide variety of international clients, and it would be beneficial to work in similar time zones that Vancouver is in.

Trade and Invest BC has supported Atomhawk when they first established their presence in Vancouver in 2017, and has continued to support them through their decision to grow their studio in B.C. Our Trade and Investment Representative in Europe has identified their needs and provided useful market intelligence such as operation and leases information and innovation funds details. The support and responsiveness have created a positive experience for Atomhawk expanding in British Columbia.
