Located in the southeast corner of B.C., bordering both the United States and Alberta, the Kootenay region is one of Canada's leading destinations for outdoor pursuits. hiking, mountain biking, skiing, fishing and river rafting are all popular attractions.

Four of B.C.'s seven national parks are located here, and the region is one of pristine rivers, lakes, waterfalls, beaches, mineral hot springs, alpine meadows and snow-capped mountains.

Kootenay is also known for its wonderfully restored heritage towns, thriving arts communities and its many cultural events.

Coal production, mining and logging are important industries in this area. Tourism also contributes to the economy.

To 2022, the B.C. government forecasts an annual employment growth rate of 0.7 percent in the Kootenay region. It is expected that there will be 29,300 job openings over the 10-year period. The top employment growth industry is Health and Social Services.
