Harbour Air Takes Off in China

Vancouver-based Harbour Air and China’s Zongzhen Industrial Group Co., Ltd. are partnering to provide tourism and commuter air services to key cities throughout China, especially the cities along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The companies will begin by offering seaplane routes out of the City of Chongqing, and expand throughout Eastern China.

In China, millions of people live hours from the closest airports, living on the coast or near waterways. Now that China has opened up low-altitude commercial flights, Zongshen Group plans to work with Harbour Air to offer air travel to these new key markets.

“This strategic partnership is a tremendous opportunity for Harbour Air, its employees and Canadian aviation to export its services and grow,” said Harbour Air founder and CEO Greg McDougall. “We are delighted that one of China’s most respected business leaders is investing in the British Columbia-made airline we have built and will take our model into the world’s largest marketplace. This unique investment from China is an historic moment for Canadian aviation.”

Zongzhen Group, one of the leading motorcycle and engine companies in China, is looking to Harbour Air to re-create its successful seaplane commuter air travel model in major cities throughout China. Canadian interests will retain 75% of voting shares of Harbour Air.

British Columbia’s transportation sector is recognized for providing specialized products and services to customers around the world and Harbour Air’s seaplane expertise is a perfect example of this. Investors in China and worldwide look to British Columbia for its demonstrated strength in aerospace manufacturing, maintenance, and logistics.

Throughout the process, British Columbia’s Trade and Investment’s Representatives (BCTIRs) in Guangzhou maintained close communication with the Zongshen Group to help identify the company’s investment needs. They profiled investment opportunities in British Columbia and coordinated with the Ministry of International Trade team to support the Group’s visits to Vancouver.

The Ministry of International Trade helps international investors, buyers, and other key partners do business with British Columbia companies through a network of local contacts. Knowledgeable staff also help international businesses discover the benefits of British Columbia as a destination for investment, a partner for trade and innovation, and a source of quality goods, services, and resources around the world.
