Homegrown Natural Resource Management Web-based Tool Growing in the US

Homegrown Natural Resource Management Web-based Tool Growing in the US

Located in Victoria, British Columbia, Foundry Spatial is an innovative software development organization that specializes in building web-based tools for natural resource management. Foundry Spatial offers a cloud-based application that allows government, environmental and resource agencies, and industry clients to assess the impact of their projects on surface waters in rivers, lakes and streams. End users can easily obtain this information on their own, saving hours, days and even weeks of time. Most importantly, this tool allows users to do what was not possible in the past: obtain environmental data and analytics without having to hire consultants.

Turning raw data into meaningful and useful information is at the heart of what Foundry Spatial does. Foundry Spatial’s primary focus is on hydrology and water management, but the company has also developed tools for environmental analytics, including applications focused on forest management. These applications help people make informed decisions on issues ranging from the changing climate and natural hazard risk, to real estate and supply chains.

In 2016, Foundry Spatial expanded to Alberta, with an initial focus on the Montney and Duvernay resource development areas of west-central Alberta. Now, the company provides products and services to customers throughout the rest of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Asia. Its solutions are based on its geospatial data management and analytics platform, Fountainhead, and also include custom application design and development services. Foundry Spatial has a proven track record of software development in mapping, data visualization, machine learning and decision support.

Foundry Spatial is growing in the United States. It is currently conducting a pilot research project in California. The Nature Conservancy (an environmental non-governmental organization) has partnered with Foundry Spatial and the University of Victoria to test approaches for incorporating groundwater into existing surface water tools in the Navarro River Watershed in Northern California. Foundry Spatial has also been invited by the California State Water Resources Control Board to demonstrate its approach in December 2018.

Foundry Spatial’s initial goal for exporting is specifically aimed at the California market, with plans to broaden to other areas in the continental U.S. in the short to mid-term. The company is also working on a product targeting property flood risk across the continental United States and intends to sell this directly to consumers in the next two years. Foundry Spatial is collaborating with Trade and Invest BC who provide strategic support and guidance, as well as facilitate introductions to help the company continue to grow exports to the U.S. market.

Foundry Spatial’s client base includes government agencies, natural resource development companies, non-profits, industry associations and academic institutions. Over the past year, 25% of the company’s total revenue came from exports and there is substantial future growth potential in export markets.
