Sustainable B.C. Seafood Company Brings its Products to Market in Hong Kong
Consumers around the world are increasingly conscious of sustainability when making purchasing decisions. British Columbia is known for its high standard of sustainability, particularly within the seafood industry, positioning its businesses effectively to serve a modern consumer.
Organic Ocean is a Vancouver-based seafood supplier that provides sustainably sourced products to a global market. Trade and Investment British Columbia representatives have worked with Organic Ocean to expand its products in the Hong Kong Market.
As a certified B Corporation, Organic Ocean is obligated to consider the social and environmental interests of its stakeholders, leading to a more sustainable approach to business. For Organic Ocean, it means that the interests of the environment and Indigenous groups are effectively represented and protected and held equal to that of corporate profits. B Corporation certification is issued by global non-profit organization B Lab, and requires the company to ingrain its stakeholder commitments in its governing documents and undergo an assessment to ensure it is committed to sustainable business practices. Seafood produced by Organic Ocean is regularly sampled and DNA tested to ensure integrity in seafood traceability.
Since 2017, Organic Ocean has been exporting its products to Hong Kong by air, working with local importers of gourmet food and premium seafood products. Hong Kong Trade and Invest BC representatives supported Organic Ocean’s presence at Seafood Expo Asia 2017, a large industry event. In early 2019, Organic Ocean demonstrated its products to an audience of industry buyers, local customers and media contacts in Hong Kong. The products they brought to the event quickly sold out, prompting Organic Ocean to be invited back to Hong Kong by retail giant A.S. Watson Group in September to do a full launch of its products in a number of the company’s stores.
The connections built through these events will help Organic Ocean expand its reach and potentially enter the larger Chinese market.
With its fresh and diverse product offering and commitment to sustainability, the British Columbia seafood sector is a great fit for the Chinese market. B.C. is home to a variety of sustainability initiatives including Ocean Wise and certified sustainable fisheries.
