Region:  Lower Mainland/Southwest

Nation:  St'át'imc

The majestic mountains, beautiful valleys and river are home to the Xaxli’pemc people. They are culturally-based with a strong sense of pride in their heritage, culture, and spirituality. The community is determined to protect their Aboriginal title and rights and a strong desire to keep it alive as a part of their self-governance. The Xaxli’pemc are a strong, generous, sharing, friendly, and respectful nation that enjoy the amenities of hunting, fishing, berry picking, and clean water and air.

Xaxli’p belongs to the St’at’imc Nation and is a member of the Lillooet Tribal Council. The offices of the Xaxli'p band government are located at Fountain Valley, British Columbia, about 15km up the Fraser Canyon from the town of Lillooet.

Xaxli’p, meaning "brow of the hill”, formally known as the Fountain Indian Band, is the second largest St’át’imc community, having a population of 1,021 members and a total reserve size of 1581.6 hectares.

At the beginning of time, the Xaxli’pemc people descended from the mythological cultural icon Coyote, who travelled about and destroyed the evil in the area to prepare the land as well as its food for the people. Fishing, hunting and plant gathering are central components of Xaxli’p culture. The Six-Mile fishery, Sxetl’, meaning "drop off” is the main fishery for Xaxli’p that was created by Coyote when he brought the salmon up the Fraser creating the water-falls so it would be a good fishing spot for the Xaxli’p people. When he finished creating the water-falls, he sat down on a rock overlooking the river, leaving the marks of his seat and feet, which is still visible today. (From
