Investing in BC's North Coast Region

Bordering the Pacific Ocean,, the North Coast region is an area of spectacular forests, majestic mountains and rugged coastlines. Many tourists admire the beauty of the area onboard the luxury cruise ships that sail up the coast to Alaska. People choose to live here for its easy access to outdoor pursuits, relaxed lifestyle and growing economy.

The natural landscape makes this area popular with those who enjoy spending time outdoors. The pristine wilderness provides a home for many species of wildlife, including grizzly bears, cougars, wolves and salmon. The Kermode bear, a rare cream-coloured Black Bear, is found in some areas along the coast.

Historically, commercial fishing, logging and mining have been very important to the economy of the North Coast. The economy has diversified in recent years as a result of new capacity at the Port of Prince Rupert, major investments in the aluminum smelter in Kitimat and plans for liquefied natural gas plants and other large infrastructure projects. These projects are bringing jobs and new opportunities to the area.

The B.C. government forecasts an annual employment growth rate of 1.5 percent in the Nechako and North Coast regions to 2022. It is expected that there will be 20,100 job openings over the 10-year period. The top employment growth industry is Construction.
