Archaeological and ethnographic evidence suggests people have occupied the Kitselas Canyon area for at least 5,000 years.
The language used by the Kitselas Nation is Tsimshian (or Symalgyax). The coastal and inland dialects of the language differed only in the use of a few words. There are four main clans. Everyone in the Tsimshian First Nation belongs to one of the Clans or sub-clans. The main clans are: Gispudwada (Killerwhale), Laxgiboo (Wolf), Laxsgiik (Eagle), Ganhada (Raven). Presently, the Kitselas Membership totals approximately five hundred plus persons. The Kitselas Territory is comprised of nine Reservations, three of which are occupied (the communities of Gitaus, Kulspai and Endudoon). The Kitselas are among seven Tsimshian groups who occupy Northwest BC.
