Overview

Region:  Thompson/Okanagan

Nation:  Secwepemc

The Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band has a unique vision and drive in its economic development. The creation of Quaaout Lodge, Talking Rock Golf and Le7ka Spa has helped promote Secwepemc culture, and allowed the Little Shuswap to develop world class accommodation and leisure activities. The Band has not only led the way in tourism within the Shuswap, it has also led the way in economic development. The Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band goes evKids on dockery step of the way to dispel the stereotype of what an Indian Reserve looks like, or any perceived lifestyle of reserve living.

The infrastructure is advanced in many respects, and a great deal of planning has been quietly executed with desirable results. Development includes a gas station and retail/office space that greets you as you cross the Squilax bridge headed towards Scotch Creek, another popular tourist area in the Shuswap. A newly developed airstrip, intended for light aircraft was also designed to retain its natural surroundings. Consideration has also been given to the already depleting wildlife that occasionally use the acres to graze. The acres were once hunting grounds that have long since become too exposed to traffic and population growth, not only in Skwlax and the Scotch Creek area, but also Anglemont. This growth has contributed greatly to the abandonment of the land by the animals.

The Little Shuswap is also traditionally known as Skwlax, which translates to Black Bear in Secwepemcstin, the traditional language. Each First Nation community has its own symbol that has deep meaning to the ancestry. Though there are different symbols and names for the once thirty two Bands, (now seventeen) that make up the Secwepemc Nation.

Creative and courageous financing has been the key to the progressive development that continues to take place at Little Shuswap. Strong management and leadership with clear vision make up the engine that drives the community forward.
