Shackan Indian Band is an Nlaka’pamux First Nations government located in the Nicola Valley, approximately 20 km east of Spences Bridge and 40 km west of Merritt on Hwy 8. Shackan is known also as "14 Mile."

The Scw'exmx - People of the Creeks - is taken from the name of the Nicola River, Scw'ex, meaning creek. The Shackan Indian Band is one of five bands in the Nicola Valley who comprise the Scw'exmx. The five bands of the Nicola Tribes are: Coldwater Indian Band, Lower Nicola Indian Band, Upper Nicola Indian Band, Nooaitch Indian Band, and Shackan Indian Band. Together, the numbers of the 5 Nicola Tribes totals well over 3,000 individuals. All part of a proud, strong, thriving Indigenous Nation of the BC Interior.

The bands who make up the Scw'exmx are, in turn, members of the Nlaka'pamux Nation. The Nlaka'pamux traditional territory extends well into the State of Washington, as far north as Ashcroft, as far east as Douglas Lake and as far West as Lillooet.

All the communities of the Nlaka'pamux Nation hold title to this territory, encompassing thousands of square kilometers collectively. The Shackan Indian Band has three reserves. The majority of band members reside on the main reserve, located along the Nicola River, which has a total land base of 6,413 acres. The Papsilqua Reserve is located to the northeast of Papsilqua and Skuhun Creek with a total of 730 acres. The Soldatquo Reserve is located a few kilometres north of Shackan with the total land area. of 2,429 acres.

Community Vision

Members of the Shackan Band envision a Healthy community that lives in accordance with traditional Scw'exmx values. These values include sharing, helping, learning and teaching.

These values translate into: helping the younger generation realize their potential, promoting everyones involvement in the life of the Community, and also in being generous to those in need.

The Band Office is to promote the development of a healthy lifestyle and self-sufficiency for Shackan community members. We will achieve by being helpful, positive, respectful and professional to leadership, co-workers and Shackan members when administrating band programs.
