The Village of Alert Bay has a population of 489 people, and the remainder of the island's population lives in the Whe-la-la-u, which represents several First Nations groups, and two sections of the Regional District of Mount Waddington.

Some locals also take the ferry across to Vancouver Island for work, while many work for the 'Namgis First Nation, BC Ferries, and local businesses. You'll still see the occasional working seine boat in the Alert Bay's Small Craft Harbour.
