Alert Bay is on Cormorant Island, which is four square kilometres in size. 'Namgis First Nation has the largest population on the island, with just under 500 people. The Village of Alert Bay has a population of 489 people, and the remainder of the island's population lives in the Whe-la-la-u, which represents several First Nations groups, and two sections of the Regional District of Mount Waddington.
There are two elementary schools on the island, the Alert Bay School and the T'lisalagi'lakw School. Grade 8-12 students take a foot ferry across to Port McNeill to attend high school. Some locals also take the ferry across to Vancouver Island for work, while many work for the 'Namgis First Nation, BC Ferries, and local businesses. You'll still see the occasional working seine boat in the Alert Bay's Small Craft Harbour.
