British Columbia Fish Processor Lands Multiple Deals from Seafood Expo

British Columbia Fish Processor Lands Multiple Deals from Seafood Expo

Hub City Fisheries, of Nanaimo, British Columbia, netted big rewards after attending the Seafood Expo North America event in the spring of 2014.

In the months following the show, the Vancouver Island-based value-added fish processor finalized several deals to supply fish destined for the U.S. and Asian markets, landing contracts totaling over $400,000 and making valuable connections for future opportunities.

Roger Paquette, president of Hub City, is enthusiastic about the company’s success.  “We had a chance to show off our quality product to so many different potential clients and our display in the British Columbia booth was instrumental in giving us access to those parties.”

Seafood Expo North America/Seafood Processing North America (formerly known as the International Boston Seafood Show) is the largest seafood trade event in North America. The event attracts over 20,000 buyers and suppliers of fresh, frozen, packaged and value-added seafood products, equipment, and services. Attendees travel from more than 100 countries to do business at the exposition, making the event an excellent opportunity to showcase the best of British Columbia seafood to a global pool of qualified buyers.

Months later, B.C.’s seafood is what brought many of those buyers to Hub City Fisheries. “A number of potential buyers visited our operation in Nanaimo and we’re now doing business with several. We are confident that these relationships will continue and have long-lasting positive effects for Hub City Fisheries.”

Paquette added that the company expanded its workforce this year, in part due to sales generated by the seafood expo.  “We look forward to continuing our presence in Boston to showcase our premium West Coast seafood and show the world that B.C. is the place to do business.”

British Columbia’s presence at the event March 16-18, 2014, was coordinated by the Ministry of International Trade in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, and the province’s U.S. Trade and Investment Representative team provided business matchmaking opportunities for the companies. Fourteen B.C. companies displayed their products at the Province’s booth and made use of space made available for business meetings.

B.C.’s Ministry of International Trade offers a range of services to help British Columbia seafood companies like Hub City who are interested in expanding their export potential, including opportunities to gain international exposure through participation in sector-specific tradeshows and events globally.
