Ecosign Mountain Resort Planners Goes for Gold in Beijing


Whistler, British Columbia is known as a world–class ski resort and one of the host cities for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but it is also now being recognized as home to one of the world’s preeminent resort planners.

Ecosign Mountain Resort Planners has designed resorts and Olympic facilities for cities around the world, including Calgary in 1988, Salt Lake City in 2002, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014. The company has also played a significant role in winter resort development in China, having worked on numerous ski resorts in the country including Genting Secret Garden Ski Resort and Taiwu Ski Resort, located in Hebei province.

Their experience in the region led them to be asked to design the snow cluster venues for China’s 2022 Olympic bid. Once China was awarded the rights to host the Games, the organizing committee invited global design firms to submit biddings for the competitions venues and infrastructures in Yangqing, Beijing where all sliding and alpine skiing events will be held. Ecosign joined a bidding partnership led by China Architecture Design & Research Group (CAG) and submitted their design.

Last December the CAG partnership was chosen by Beijing’s Organizing Committee to be the finalist of the competition. Ecosign will now work with their design partners on developing the 10-square-kilometer area in Yanqing including the 200,000-sqm competition venues for alpine Skiing, freestyle and snowboarding and nordic events, as well as the auxiliary infrastructures.

British Columbia’s Trade and Invest team in Beijing assisted the company by introducing them to key Chinese government contacts, and invited Ecosign to government and business events related to the 2022 Winter Olympics.
