New Hainan Airlines Service Connects B.C. to Tianjin and Shenzhen

New Hainan Airlines Service Connects B.C. to Tianjin and Shenzhen

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) recently celebrated the arrival of Hainan Airlines and its direct service between Vancouver and Shenzhen via Tianjin. YVR is the first Canadian airport to fly to Tianjin and Shenzhen. The twice-weekly service also marks Tianjin’s first direct connection to North America.

YVR now has the most Mainland Chinese carriers in North America, including China Eastern’s non-stop service between Nanjing and Vancouver, which launched in January 2017. China Southern added a new route between Guangzhou and Mexico City via Vancouver last April, adding to its existing direct flights between Vancouver and Guangzhou. Hong Kong Airlines, a member of the HNA Group, also began non-stop service from Hong Kong to Vancouver in the summer of 2017.

New services such as these are made possible through YVR’s five-year airline rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program offers a standard rate structure for airline landing and terminal fees to help airlines grow sustainably at YVR. Hainan Airlines is China’s fourth largest airline in terms of fleet size, making them a significant partner for YVR.

Partnerships between airlines and airports have direct economic benefits to the region. The operational and tourism impacts of Hainan Airlines’ new route are estimated to contribute $12.4 million in economic output and more than $6 million in GDP for the province. Increased air passenger routes attract investment, benefiting B.C. businesses.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Li Keqiang announced 2018 as the Canada-China Year of Tourism, and Hainan Airlines’ year-round service will facilitate further travel between the two nations. B.C. has also embraced China’s most popular app WeChat to help promote tourism.

The Trade & Invest BC Guangzhou Office maintains good business relations with Hainan Airlines and invites their representatives to events and tradeshows where British Columbian businesses are showcased. The office facilitates business communications between Hainan Airlines and B.C. stakeholders.
