Record Opening for International Designer Outlet at Vancouver International Airport

Record Opening for International Designer Outlet at Vancouver International Airport

The McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport attracted more than 160,000 shoppers over the opening weekend in July 2015 – a record for European retail developer McArthurGlen Group.

Located in Richmond, British Columbia, next to Vancouver International Airport, the mall is a joint venture between McArthurGlen, Europe’s leading owner, developer and manager of designer outlets, and the Vancouver Airport Authority, a community-based, not-for-profit organization that operates Vancouver International Airport.

Joan Jove, McArthurGlen's development director for North America, said, “McArthurGlen Vancouver Airport will offer a highly distinctive, luxury-oriented retail destination. Vancouver offers an excellent location, economic strength, tourism potential, as well as a strong partner in the Vancouver Airport Authority – all elements that guarantee success when opening a premium retail centre.”

The centre adds to British Columbia’s reputation as an outstanding tourist destination. It is expected to attract shoppers from the nearly nine million tourists who visit the city each year and from the more than 17 million who pass through the airport. It will also draw customers from the nearly three million residents who live within a 90-minute drive.

Tony Gugliotta, the airport authority's senior vice president, marketing and business development, stated: “This project reinforces Vancouver International Airport's role. Not only will it increase the region's destination appeal for travelers, it will also offer the airport an alternative revenue source that will allow us to continue building YVR as a premier global gateway.”

Staff from the Ministry of International Trade in British Columbia and from the BC Trade and Investment Representative’s office in London met with McArthurGlen to assist with setting up and operating in B.C., and will provide ongoing support throughout the life of the project.
