Scentuals opens first store in Vietnam

Scentuals opens first store in Vietnam

British Columbia’s Scentuals Natural and Organic Skin Care opened its first Asian boutique in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on November 9, 2015, bringing natural, organic, fair-trade products to a growing Asian middle class.

Store owner Mai Mowrey held the opening in conjunction with the trade mission of International Trade Minister Teresa Wat to draw attention to the high-quality products the Coquitlam business is bringing to Vietnam’s largest city. Trade missions such as the visit this year to China and Vietnam help B.C. businesses make a positive impact in international markets.

Scentuals, a family business with 15 staff, sells its products online in Canada and supplies almost 1,000 retailers. But Mowrey says they decided to expand into her birth country after researching the market.

“We owe our success to the high-quality products we sell at a reasonable price,” Mowrey says. Western products are already popular in Vietnam, she notes, so the company’s focus is to educate its customers about the importance of organic and natural ingredients.

Vietnam has significant market potential for B.C. producers. Exports to Vietnam have risen from $49 million in 2010 to $104 million in 2014. Vietnam is a large market of 90 million people, with eight million considered middle-class in 2012. That number is projected to increase by as much as four times to 43 million by 2020, and 92 million by 2030.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement, when implemented, will give B.C. businesses greater access to Pacific Rim markets such as Vietnam, where high tariffs will be reduced or eliminated.

The Ministry of International Trade helps export-ready B.C. firms through our Trade and Investment Representatives in Vancouver and in priority markets. Knowledgeable staff helps international businesses discover the benefits of British Columbia as a source of quality goods, services, and resources, a destination for investment, and a partner for trade and innovation around the world.
