Making Roads Safer with B.C.-Made AI Technology

British Columbia (B.C.) is a global hub for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), supported by a vibrant tech ecosystem, world-class research institutions and a highly skilled workforce. As home to Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster and the Quantum Algorithms Institute, B.C. leads the nation in applied and commercial AI innovation. These advancements are transforming industries locally and globally, including intelligent transportation. At the forefront of this evolution is Viion Systems (Viion), a Victoria-based company redefining traffic safety through AI-powered camera technology.

Smart Traffic Technology Made in B.C.

Viion is based in B.C.’s capital city of Victoria which boasts a growing technology cluster that attracts both global companies and innovative startups. The company develops advanced smart camera systems that integrate real-time analytics to monitor traffic and deliver actionable insights. Designed and manufactured in B.C., these solutions combine AI with high-performance imaging to help public agencies enhance road safety and operational efficiency. Its technology is already making a measurable difference in jurisdictions around Latin America, Africa and Asia, supporting:

  • Speed enforcement
  • Incident detection
  • Wrong-way driver (WWD) prevention
  • Stolen vehicle identification

Viion’s AI-enabled Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system can detect uninsured vehicles 24/7 without requiring constant police involvement. This allows enforcement officers to focus on higher-priority tasks, while increasing public safety and conserving public resources.

By harnessing AI to enable faster response times and smarter infrastructure planning, Viion is helping cities reduce traffic risks and save lives. As a standout in B.C.’s thriving AI ecosystem, the company exemplifies how local innovation can deliver global impact.

Fueling Global Growth with Trade and Invest B.C.

As Viion continues to expand internationally, Trade and Invest British Columbia (TIBC) has played a key role in supporting its growth. TIBC helps B.C. companies access global markets through targeted programming, international connections and opportunities to attend major trade events.

With TIBC’s support, Viion joined the B.C. delegation to Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona in both 2024 and 2025. The exposure at MWC led to promising business discussions and the signing of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) to pursue Proofs of Concept (POCs) with a risk management firm located in South Africa and an infrastructure consultancy located in Mexico. The additional credibility and visibility gained through the B.C. delegation advanced these conversations. Viion also attracted new leads from the Middle East through follow-up promotional efforts linked to MWC.

The support Viion received from the TIBC team helped lay the foundation for international expansion and fostered connections that led to tangible business outcomes. Viion is exploring new opportunities in Latin America, with potential support from Trade and Invest B.C.’s Mexico-based Trade and Invest Representative (TIR). The company also collaborated with TIBC’s India TIR, whose insights and introductions to the local Trade Commissioner contributed to Viion securing one of the India’s most significant automatic traffic enforcement projects.

Today, Viion’s advanced traffic enforcement systems are deployed in 13 countries, helping improve safety and efficiency on roads worldwide. In Ecuador, more than 900 Viion cameras have been installed, contributing to a 73% reduction in traffic-related fatalities. In Mexico, the system processes nearly one million speed violation evidence packages per month, improving driver compliance and reducing reckless driving. In Ivory Coast, over 120 cameras are part of a national initiative to detect violations such as speeding, red-light running and illegal lane changes—enhancing traffic flow, boosting public safety and streamlining urban mobility.

B.C. Innovation on the Global Stage

B.C.’s vibrant AI sector empowers companies like Viion to lead in intelligent infrastructure solutions. With ongoing support from TIBC’s global network, which includes over 20 international offices across China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, India, Europe, Mexico and the United States, B.C. companies are well equipped to expand their global presence and compete on the world stage.
