Leading shared workspace provider, WeWork, is rapidly expanding in Vancouver. Responding to Vancouver’s booming tech and innovation sectors, the company has added four new locations since establishing its first co-working office space in 2017.
Most recently, the New-York-based company established approximately 85,000 square feet of space with over 1,100 desks at a location on Seymour Street, 43,000 square feet on Main Street and an additional 46,000 square feet with up to 850 desks available on South West Marine Drive.
When WeWork was first established in 2010, the company aimed to support businesses and entrepreneurs, creating spaces where people could work, come together and collaborate on projects. Today, WeWork is providing spaces for everyone from entrepreneurs setting up their first businesses to multinational companies with thousands of employees. WeWork hit a major milestone in December 2018, opening in their 100th city. The company operates in 26 countries and has grown to reach 400,000 members across 400 locations.
British Columbia trade and investment representatives in Boston and Seattle worked closely with WeWork to support its continued expansion in the province. Ongoing meetings took place with senior WeWork executives in New York City and its operations team in Seattle. Trade and Invest British Columbia facilitated introductions with contacts throughout the province to assist WeWork with expanding its investment in B.C. and increasing overall brand awareness and market growth.
WeWork considers British Columbia to be a region with great potential and foresees a total investment of 1 million square feet across multiple municipalities in the future. The company’s investment reflects Vancouver’s emergence as an international business and technology hub.
In 2017, the Vancouver tech ecosystem was ranked 1st in Canada and 15th globally by Startup Genome. The Greater Vancouver area is home to roughly 6,700 tech companies contributing to a vibrant tech ecosystem with an innovative talent pool. Coupled with a highly developed research infrastructure, competitive business costs, a supportive government and close ties to the United States and Asia, British Columbia offers businesses a home to successfully invest, partner and grow. It is for these reasons that companies like WeWork are thriving and expanding in British Columbia.
