Now in its eighth year, the Aerospace Defence and Security Expo was held in Abbotsford on Aug. 9 and 10, featuring Canadian and international aerospace companies with industry exhibits and workshops.  This event was held in conjunction with Canada’s largest airshow, the Abbotsford International Airshow, which has been running for over 50 years. The Expo was hosted by the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (Pacific Division) and showcased British Columbia’s aerospace sector, as well as provided information sharing and networking opportunities for individuals in the private and public sector. Both the federal and provincial governments had representatives attend and speak at the event.

British Columbia’s aerospace sector is globally recognized for producing high-quality, specialized products and services. The industry is further supported by a number of post-secondary institutions, such as BCIT’s aerospace program, that supply the highly skilled labour force needed to grow the sector.

During the Expo, Vancouver Island-based Viking Air Limited announced that its parent company, Longview Aviation Capital, signed a contract with Cascade Aerospace of Abbotsford to work on the Viking Enhanced Aerial Firefighter Conversion Program. Cascade Aerospace has experience converting other firefighting aircraft for Alberta and Saskatchewan and will apply its expertise to this complex conversion. British Columbia’s aerospace companies are leaders in the field and have proven track records for quality and innovation.

British Columbia, due to its proximity to the largest global aerospace clusters – the state of Washington and the Asia-Pacific region, is well-positioned to thrive in this sector.  In addition to aircraft-building companies, the province also has a diverse group of technology companies that work to meet the niche needs of industry leaders and global supply chains.
