Several B.C. exporters are being recognized for their exceptional achievements in innovation, job creation and contributions to the B.C. economy. Nine companies received top honours at the 36th
Annual BC Export Awards
, which honour the success and innovation of export companies in British Columbia.
Since its inception in 1982, the awards program has acknowledged the work of over 300 companies, reflecting the growth and diversity of British Columbia’s economy over the past 30 years. Extending across many industries, the awards recognize achievements in nine different categories and celebrate the contributions exporters make to both the provincial and national economy.

Exporter of the Year and Natural Resources Category Winner
has had its roots in the lumber industry since 1979. During this time, the company began as a small lumber remanufacturing facility and evolved to a forest products corporation with 300 employees. They focus on harvesting the highest quality Canadian timber. In accepting the honours, the company attributed its success to the many men and women who work every day at its operations in Langley and Port Alberni.
Leadership Award Winner
Scott Phillips, CEO and President of StarFish Medical
is the recipient of this year’s leadership award. He is the founder and CEO of the StarFish group of companies, including StarFish Medical and ViVitro Labs Inc. StarFish is a leading service provider and medical device design company with a full complement of design, development and manufacturing services. This organization successfully partners with innovative companies to create breakthrough products for a number of medical specialty areas. Scott Philips is proud to be recognized for his role in inspiring others as he has always been motivated by community and helping others to achieve success.
Advancing Technology & Innovation Category
has designed and built over 50 of the world’s most popular theme park rides. In addition to its line of innovative rides, it creates premium, customized ride systems and provides parts and service support for rides of all kinds.
Clean Technology Category
is driving the application of big data and predictive analytics in agriculture by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Its solutions enable growers of these high-value crops to monitor micro-climates, insect pest activity and plant diseases to determine where and when to take action to protect and increase crop value.
Consumer Products Category
Shearwater Research Inc.
designs and manufactures open and closed-circuit dive computers for the most demanding divers. Shearwater holds a leading position among similar companies and has a reputation for some of the highest quality instruments on the market. Its computers are easy to use for divers at all development levels and have a reputation for being reliable, user friendly and easy to read underwater.
Digital Media & Entertainment Category
is an interactive entertainment company and an industry leader of massively multiplayer high-quality mobile games, including the globally popular and award-winning Marvel Contest of Champions and Transformers: Forged to Fight. Kabam was ranked B.C.’s fifth largest video-game developer in 2017, with more than 170 employees.
Emerging Exporter Category
supports the farming community by providing innovative, effective and economical soil additives that help increase yields. Ground-breaking experimentation and rigorous research conducted by Active AgriScience’s Innovation Lab, provides products with proven results.
Manufactured Products Category
Altec Integrated Solutions Ltd.
designs and manufactures precision machinery and advanced control panel equipment. They create innovative solutions to solve the toughest application demands in the amusement park industry and the veneer and plywood manufacturing industry.
Professional Services Category
Traction on Demand
is North America’s largest independent Salesforce consulting and application development firm. Its work extends beyond cloud services as it works to build long-term capacity through partnership and customer enablement.
The British Columbia Government contributed $20,000 towards the awards this year. The Ministry of Jobs, Trade and Technology sits on the Steering Committee for the event, as well as the Judging Panel and is here to help companies from British Columbia expand their export potential.
